How is Luna different from ChatGPT?+
Instead of just giving your child answers, Luna teaches your child the underlying concept so they can answer the question themselves.
It’s designed to teach your child the same way a real tutor would – by speaking with them, chatting through the concept step-by-step, and drawing out the concept visually on an interactive whiteboard so your child can see every step worked out for themselves.
What is the age range for Luna?+
Luna covers the full K-12 range. She adapts the difficulty, pace and tone automatically, from early primary right through to exam preparation.
Should I use Luna on a phone, tablet or computer?+
We recommend a computer. The interactive whiteboard is where most of the teaching happens, and it gives your child the most room to write, draw and work through problems with their tutor. A tablet works well too. A phone is best kept for quick sessions.
How will the system evaluate student progress?+
Every child starts with a short diagnostic, and Luna keeps assessing quietly during every session. You get a simple weekly report showing exactly what improved.
If you would also like an independent benchmark, you can add an optional MAP Growth assessment — the standardized test from NWEA used by schools across the US — to see how your child compares with grade-level norms, and to track that over time.
Is Luna aligned to the Common Core curriculum?+
Yes. Every skill Luna teaches is mapped to a named standard, for every subject and every grade from Kindergarten to 12. Mathematics and English Language Arts follow the Common Core State Standards; Science follows the Next Generation Science Standards; Social Studies follows the C3 Framework and your state’s standards.
That mapping is what makes the rest work. When the diagnostic finds a gap, it is a specific standard, not a vague topic. Every lesson targets one. And your weekly report shows which standards your child has mastered and which come next, in the same language their school would use.
What is the science behind the method?+
A 1:1 tutor for every child. In 1984 Benjamin Bloom compared children taught one-to-one with children taught in a conventional class. The tutored children scored about two standard deviations higher — the average tutored child did better than 98% of the class. He called it the 2 Sigma Problem, because 1:1 tutoring had never been affordable at scale. It is now. Bloom, 1984
Mastery learning. Bloom’s tutored children were also taught to mastery: a child does not move on until they have genuinely understood the current step. Across dozens of studies, mastery learning alone lifts achievement by around half a standard deviation. Luna checks understanding before every step forward and goes back when it is missing. Kulik, Kulik & Bangert-Drowns, 1990
The zone of proximal development. Lev Vygotsky showed that children learn fastest on work just beyond what they can do alone, with support from someone who can. Too easy and nothing is learned; too hard and they shut down. The diagnostic finds that zone for each topic, and Luna keeps every lesson inside it. Vygotsky, 1978
The forgetting curve. Hermann Ebbinghaus found that we lose most of what we learn within days unless we revisit it, and that each well-timed review flattens the curve. Luna brings skills back for retrieval at increasing intervals, so what your child learned last month is still there next year. Murre & Dros, 2015
Metacognition. John Flavell’s research on metacognition shows that children who monitor their own understanding — who can tell when they are stuck and why — learn more from the same lessons. Luna asks your child to explain their thinking, predict their answers and rate their own confidence, so they learn how to learn. Flavell, 1979
Will Luna help neurodiverse students?+
Many families tell us Luna is the first thing that worked. She is endlessly patient, repeats explanations as many times as needed, and never judges a wrong answer.
Can I get Luna for my classroom or school?+
Yes. Openschool has plans for classrooms and whole schools. Get in touch via the For Schools page and we will set you up.
